Conditions covered

19 encephalopathy divisions across 10 main treatment directions

The hospital's main admitted conditions and the TCM reasoning behind each are summarised below. Whether a case is admitted, and which protocol is used, is decided by remote consultation and in-person assessment.

Hydrocephalus

Treated as “jieshu” (open fontanelle): oral herbal formulas with external therapy and rehabilitation training; paediatric primary and post-surgical hydrocephalus is a signature focus.

Cerebral palsy

Pattern differentiation of “five delays and five flaccidities”: scalp acupuncture, tuina and herbal bathing combined with a staged rehabilitation plan; home of the national key laboratory for TCM cerebral palsy.

Intellectual disability

Classified under “five delays”: kidney-tonifying and spleen-supporting formulas with cognitive and speech training.

Autism spectrum disorder

The “open the gate, calm the spirit” framework: herbs, scalp acupuncture, auricular points and paediatric tuina with developmental education; the hospital led the national TCM protocol and clinical pathway.

Epilepsy

“Xian” pattern differentiation: phlegm-resolving and wind-extinguishing treatment with spleen support, integrated medication and seizure monitoring.

Disorders of consciousness (vegetative state)

The “shenhun” framework: spirit-awakening acupuncture, nasogastric herbal therapy and external applications with arousal-oriented rehabilitation nursing.

Stroke (ischaemic or haemorrhagic)

Spirit-awakening acupuncture with in-house stroke formulas in an integrated medical–nursing–rehabilitation pathway.

Traumatic brain injury and sequelae

Integrated rehabilitation for motor, cognitive and speech impairment after craniocerebral injury.

Post-operative brain tumour rehabilitation

TCM modulation of post-surgical deficits and chemotherapy or radiotherapy side effects alongside functional rehabilitation.

ALS / motor neuron disease

“Wei” pattern differentiation at China's first dedicated ALS ward: herbs with acupuncture, moxibustion and meridian external therapy for long-term disease management.

General internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology and paediatrics departments are also on site, so patients with comorbidities can be treated by several specialties under one roof.

Key Specialty Departments

Six department directions worth crossing the ocean for

An objective introduction to the hospital's specialty departments and their care directions; actual admission scope and treatment arrangements are subject to the hospital's assessment.

Acupuncture Dept. · Electro-Needle Center

A Shaanxi provincial key specialty and the home of Master Xia Yuqing's electro-needle therapy. It offers dozens of external TCM techniques — electro-needle, Xingnao Kaiqiao needling, Governor-vessel moxibustion, thread embedding and more — mainly providing acupuncture care for neurological conditions such as post-stroke hemiplegia, spinal cord injury, facial paralysis and neuralgia.

Preventive Care Dept. (Zhi Wei Bing)

A provincial key specialty in TCM preventive care, oriented to wellness and recuperation: constitution assessment, constitution balancing, prevention for high stroke-risk groups, post-surgery and late-stage rehabilitation care, and sub-health care for insomnia and anxiety — supported by moxibustion, cupping, medicinal baths and TCM dietary guidance.

Pediatric Cerebral Palsy Dept. (Brain Ward 15)

Home of the National Key Research Laboratory for TCM treatment of cerebral palsy. Using "five delays and five flaccidities" pattern differentiation, it combines scalp acupuncture, tuina, internal herbal medicine and herbal washes with staged rehabilitation plans. It is among the hospital's most internationally known departments, drawing cerebral palsy families from overseas.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Dept. (Brain Ward 11)

A national key pediatrics specialty direction. It led the drafting of the national TCM protocol and clinical pathway for autism and developed the "Qibi Tiaoshen" TCM system: herbal medicine, scalp acupuncture, ear acupoints and pediatric tuina combined with rehabilitation education, offering comprehensive intervention for social, language and sleep-related developmental-behavioral issues.

ALS Dedicated Ward (Brain Ward 2)

China's first dedicated ALS ward and Northwest China's featured ALS specialty unit. Applying TCM "wei syndrome" pattern differentiation, it combines herbal formulas with acupuncture, moxibustion and meridian-based external therapies to provide long-term disease management and integrated Chinese-Western care for complications involving swallowing and breathing.

Stroke Rehabilitation & Brain Ward (Brain Ward 7)

For cerebral infarction, hemorrhage and their sequelae: the Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture method combined with the hospital's in-house stroke formula series forms an integrated "care-treatment-rehabilitation" stroke recovery program, also covering vertigo, headache, Parkinson's disease and vascular dementia among age-related brain conditions.
